Peace Corps Recommendations: For personal mail or packages, we strongly recommend that you do not receive packages larger than padded envelopes containing a single CD, due to a high incidence of loss, delays, and customs charges. All packages over half a kilo (1.1 pounds) will go through customs, as will packages with a declared value of over $100. Customs procedures are time-consuming and duties (up to 40% for electronic items) and fees are high. We also recommend that you do not receive money (even checks) through the mail. Also, we recommend that you do not receive items via courier services (e.g., DHL, FedEx, UPS) except for documents with no declared value. Courier services sometimes charge a fee to the recipient and the same customs regulations and fees apply. Volunteers might have to travel to Lima to pick up packages. Any expenses that Peace Corps incurs helping packages get through customs are the responsibility of the Volunteer.
